Haiku Jam with Buffy, the Poetic Kitty!

buffy portrait web

Miss Buffy

Wooooohooooowoooooooo Efurrybuddy! I have been a busy poetic pup in my semi-retirement! WOL! Today I present to you a Haiku Jam with the Beauwoowooootiful poetic kitty Buffy, Miss Firebonnet’s kitty. Go visit them here, and see all the pawesome photography and the rest of the furry family!

Thank youowooowooooo Buffy for the funfunfun! Here is our Haiku Jam. We chose a Springtime theme. Mine are in purple, and Buffy’s are in pink:

Springtime weather’s here

Did it ever go away?

The snow never came

Snow or no snow

Few birds to watch in winter

Spring is for feathers

Down feathers of babes

Drift about in the warm breeze

Flowers blossoming

Springtime is sneeze time

With tall grasses to hide in

The rain comes at night

Rain, rain, go away

Don’t like my fur to get wet

Sun and cool is best

Cool is nice for Ku

I am a creature of heat

Basking in light divine

On hot sunny days

I dig holes to stay cool in

And play with ice cubes

Hot days turn to night

Prowling through the neighborhood

Scents and sounds heighten

Hot nights snow pups sleep

Mama and furblings nearby

Dream of winter nights

I dream in Mom’s arms

Silly cattledog is near

Maybe he needs love

Kisses and cuddles

Ear scritches and tummy rubs

Love grows in the Spring

Ku you fill my heart

Your fur could serve as my nest

But too hot for spring!

The Bad Poetry Winners!

photo-1There once was a poetic puppy

Who had to read some bad poetry

Some caused so much pain in his head

That he passed out by the bed

And that’s how he picked the winners, you see

Wooohooowooooo! Thank you efurryone who pawticipated in the Bad Poetry Day Contest co-hosted by me and my buddy Oz! I made Mama read me all the poems several times to make sure I could pick the worstest, and Oz and I easily agreed! Great poetic minds think alike! The winners are…

Wooooowoooooooo! This was so much fun, and I hope you all had fun tooooowoooowooooooo!

Prizes will be sent out by Oz next week!

Poetry Styles for the Bad Poetry Day Contest

I try to write a

very bad haiku as a

bad poem sample

My fellow poet Oz and I are co-hosting the Bad Poetry Day Contest to celebrate Bad Poetry Day on August 18th. Entries will be accepted this coming weekend beginning on Friday. Click the pic to learn more about the guidelines and prizes!

Today I will go over some common poetry styles to help you all out on your quest to be the worst poet! There are so many styles, so here is a good sampling for those who are not well versed (wooohoooo! a pun!) in poetry:

Limerick: This is the great Oz’ expertise. A five line humorous, often nonsensical, poem that has the rhyme scheme of a-a-b-b-a (that is lines 1,2, & 5 rhyme and lines 3 & 4 rhyme).

Haiku: My expertise! A three line poem, with the syllables for each line = 5-7-5. A modern style of haiku is less strict and just requires 17 syllables or less. Usually the last line has a “cut” or switch of subject and traditionally they are written about nature (though not required).

Tanka: Similar to haiku, but five lines with syllables of: 5-7-5-7-7, often the last two lines have a shift in tone/feel.

Sonnets: A 14 line poem often on the topic of love. It follows the rhyme scheme of a-b-a-b… or like Shakespeare: a-b-a-b-c-d-c-d-e-f-e-f-g-g. Sonnets are also usually written in iambic pentameter meter/rhythm: soft-hard-soft-hard. Since this is a bad poetry contest, don’t worry about meter too much if you are not familiar. 🙂

Free Form: Free form poetry gives you the freedom to rhyme, or not, have a meter/rhythm, or not, choose the number of lines, and the subject. Be creative!

Other Broader Styles:

Narratives, Epic Poetry, Ballads: These are much longer usually, and tell a whole story.

Odes: Poetry usually of a serious subject matter.

Lyric: More personal and light subject matter.

Satirical Poetry: Satire.

I look forward to hearing Mama read all your bad poems to me! Good luck and have fun composing! Woooowoooooooo!

Bad Poetry Day Contest – A Limerick

Bad Poetry Day

Click pic to visit Oz where he posts the contest rules!

There once was a poets’ contest

Where you had to be the worst instead of the best

You can write in all different styles

So the process doesn’t take a while

And Oz and I are here to pick the worst

Woooowooooo! A Limerick in honor of my fellow poet Oz to announce that we are co-hosting the Bad Poetry Day Contest to celebrate Bad Poetry Day on August 18th. As Oz says:

Everyone is invited to join in the fun!
Starting on Friday, August 16 everyone is encouraged to let their inner bard out!  We want you to write the worst poem you possibly can.  There are so many styles of poetry to choose from and your poem can be of any style (ex. limerick, haiku, tanka, ode, ballad, etc.).
You don’t know the different styles of poetry?!?
No problem.  I will be posting a little information about several different styles of poetry to help you out on Monday August 12th so be sure to stop by or check your reader to learn more!
Hop on over to Oz’s blog to read the contest guidelines and learn about the pawesome prizes! Wooooowooooooo! Looking forward to reading all your entries!

Thank You Alaska!
